Soul Singer Joins Country Supergroup Alabama As Newest Names On Nashville’s Walk Of Fame

The Music City Walk of Fame added two more artists today: country band Alabama and southern soul and R&B singer Sam Moore.

Moore, the voice behind the 1967 classic “Soul Man,” is one of the first non-country singers honored with this award. Moore believes that soul has a place within Music City. In fact he says that the influences of soul bands can be found in modern-day country tracks.  

“If you listen to some of the country now you’ll hear a lot of Stax, Atlantic [Records] up under there — a little taste of Al Green, Sam & Dave, Otis Redding. You’ll hear a tinge of that,” Moore said.

Grammy Award-winning Alabama was presented with the honor next. Band member Teddy Gentry explained his high school connection to Sam Moore’s music.

“The first high school band I played with — Sam, by the way — we did half of your stuff. It was a little slow band before I cut my teeth on playing bass. And later on I was fortunate to join with these two guys,” Gentry said.

Moore and Alabama were added as the 71

^st and 72

^nd stars on the walkway, alongside artists like Dolly Parton, Kid Rock, and most recently,

Loretta Lynn and Jack White.

Inductees are honored with permanent plaques in a downtown Nashville park.
