A Nashville town that grew up around a GM plant is waiting for word today whether manufacturing will continue there.
GM’s Saturn brand was born in Spring Hill 25 years ago. When Saturn production left in 2007, GM invested a billion dollars into retooling the plant. It has the flexibility to build several vehicles and now produces the Chevy Traverse.
Spring Hill Mayor Michael Dinwiddie says other automakers would be interested in the modernized plant if GM decides to close it.
“We will immediately begin marketing that plant to another car manufacturing company. I think it’s a valuable asset to have and I don’t think that building will remain empty for very long, but I would like to see it remain in the hands of General Motors if at all possible.”
Dinwiddie says closing GM Spring Hill would be a slap in the face to American tax payers who have loaned the automaker billions to keep it afloat.
