Some four thousand people are being removed from state health insurance coverage because an audit found they don’t qualify as dependents of state workers.
Last week was the deadline for state employees to submit proof their insurance dependents are eligible.
The audit is expected to save the state more than $10 million a year, but Benefits Administration Director Laurie Lee says it isn’t just about saving money. She says the state has a responsibility to the more than 200 thousand workers and dependents who legitimately qualify for coverage.
Lee says the state won’t punish employees whose dependents it removes, so long as they complete the verification process.
“Essentially we’ve created an amnesty period for those persons to feel safe and comfortable in coming forward and taking their dependents off.”
Lee also says those losing coverage are being informed of other options, including other state programs.
