A record 2.6-million Tennessee voters cast ballots in last week’s Presidential election. The state election administrator has compiled unofficial numbers.
Nationally, turnout was expected to smash records. Tennessee didn’t go that far, though more voters showed up at the polls than ever before. The state has seen more and more voters in the last three Presidential election cycles. Brook Thompson says this year was 2.6-million.
“This is about what I was expecting when early voting started. As early voting went on, and we had so many people early vote, I got to thinking that we would have a bigger overall turnout. As it turned out, we didn’t.”
60-percent of those who cast a ballot voted early. That’s up from 45-percent in 2004, the previous record. And while more people voted in Tennessee than ever before, the turnout represented 65-percent of the 4-million registered voters. That’s slightly less than four years ago.
