The Tennessee Rehabilitation Center in Smyrna is providing a new service for veterans returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan. They’ve started a support group for veterans living with brain injuries.
Janet Morris, who heads the support group, says the rehab center is seeing a rise in the number of veterans with traumatic brain injuries, or TBIs. The group is open to anyone who has or has been affected by someone with a TBI.
“That particular individual may not be ready to come to a meeting, but maybe there is a spouse, a parent, or a sibling of that person who is having a real hard time dealing with the behaviors or the outcome that is associated with a TBI, and I think it is a good opportunity for them to be able to come in a really non-threatening way, because we are not the military, you know, it’s a real confidential setting where they can come and get information, talk.”
Morris’s support group meets on the second Tuesday of every month.
The Tennessee Rehabilitation Center has been providing vocational rehabilitation services and training for all individuals, not just for veterans, for thirty-five years.
