The rumors are true: First Lady Michelle Obama will speak at next month’s graduation for Martin Luther King Jr. Magnet School in Nashville. WPLN’s Daniel Potter was there for the official announcement this morning.
First Lady Obama was originally floated as a possible speaker last fall, when the school and Congressman Jim Cooper sent letters inviting her. Calling the news ‘surreal,’ Senior Sam Klockenkemper says the rumor she would come picked up a few days ago.
“Honestly, I didn’t believe it for a little bit, and then yesterday I started getting texts from friends at other schools, like ‘Can I get a ticket to your graduation?’ And I was like ‘Well, why?’ And they said, ‘Well, I wanna see you graduate, and I wanna see Michelle Obama speak.’”
Mrs. Obama has only spoken at about a dozen commencements since becoming First Lady. She visited Nashville to campaign for her husband’s reelection a couple times last year.
