The Tennessean sent 67 employees home with pink slips today.
Parent company Gannett Newspapers announced a 10% cut across the board in October. The result is the elimination of 92 positions, including 25 from the Tennessean newsroom.
Bob Faricy, who is the vice president of market development, says the paper will have to reduce its news output to make up for the lost manpower.
“We are trying to keep in mind what audiences are we trying to serve and what do we have to retain to serve them correctly, and then what decisions do we make outside of that to find some efficiencies.”
Faricy blames the cuts on a weak economy paired with tough times for the newspaper industry as a whole. Laid off employees will receive severance based on years of service to the paper.
