More often a critic of federal regulation, Congressman Marsha Blackburn is asking why the Food and Drug Administration didn’t do more under existing rules.
The Republican representative from Brentwood was part of Wednesday’s congressional hearing into the fungal meningitis outbreak that has been traced back to the New England Compounding Center.
“I am interested to hear why the FDA did not pursue any enforcement actions against NECC, despite having emphasized nearly a decade ago – nearly a decade go – the potential for serious public health consequences.”
On Thursday, Tennessee’s top official over infectious diseases will testify to a Senate committee. Dr. Marion Kainer has been praised for notifying federal authorities within days of the first fungal meningitis cases being diagnosed.
