The announcement of Alaska governor Sarah Palin as John McCain’s running mate is getting favorable reaction from Tennessee conservatives.
State Republican Party Chair Robin Smith says Palin is an “outstanding choice.” She calls Palin a proven conservative with a willingness to challenge the party’s old guard.
Richard Land says he’s “ecstatic” with today’s announcement. Land is president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission. He’s pleased that Palin brings a strongly anti-abortion stance to the ticket.
“The only thing better than a pro-life VP is a woman pro-life VP. I’ve already heard from several pro-life women that are just beyond thrilled that they’re going to have an attractive, articulate mother of five as one of the most prominent spokespersons for their cause.”
Sarah Palin and John McCain will officially be nominated next week at the Republican National Convention in Minnesota. The convention is scheduled to open Monday, but the start may be pushed back due to Hurricane Gustav.
