Tennessee Republicans are striking a relatively positive tone on President Obama’s plan to combat the militant group ISIS.
Brentwood Congressman Marsha Blackburn appeared on CNN soon after last night’s address. Her district includes Fort Campbell and the 101st Airborne Division. She didn’t suggest using ground troops, but she does say she’s concerned air strikes in Iraq and Syria may not be enough.
“What we would rather see him do is be more aggressive and more forthright and go after this more full force and not go at it halfway,” Blackburn said.
Blackburn also says she’d prefer the president seek authorization from congress, a desire expressed throughout the Tennessee delegation.
Tennessee Senator Bob Corker says in a statement “wording in the president’s speech was good.” But Corker – who is the ranking Republican on the foreign affairs committee – calls bypassing congress “exercising poor judgment.”
Senator Lamar Alexander says getting congress on board with a plan “is essential to uniting [the] country…behind the president’s objective.”
