Top Republican leaders say they will do whatever it takes to secure the Republican National Convention. Nashville is a finalist along with Milwaukee, but several Metro Council members have been openly against the idea of playing host.
The councilmembers have said the city doesn’t need the added security threat that hosting a Republican National Convention would involve.
They’ve also stated that the convention could reduce the potential revenue the city could bring in. There are already three conventions planned in Nashville during the same time that would have to be cancelled.
House Speaker Cameron Sexton, R-Crossville, says in a statement he’d support both the Republican and Democratic National Convention’s coming to Nashville in 2024 and highlighted that money has already been approved to cover the costs for either convention.
Senate Speaker Randy McNally, R-Oak Ridge, says that, if Metro gets in the way, the state will explore alternative options to bring in major party conventions. He did not specify what those options could be.
