The future of a new stadium for the Tennessee Titans has entered its final series of hurdles.
The deal must go through a series of three votes by Nashville’s Metro Council.
As is standard with council proposals, it passed without debate on its first vote on Tuesday night.
Before the meeting, opponents gathered outside city hall to vocalize their concerns. Nicole Valentine Vaughn, a South Nashville organizer, questioned the priorities of city leaders.
“The people of South Nashville feel like they’re overlooked, undervalued. The neighborhood is under-resourced, it’s a food desert, there’s not a grocery store in the community,” she says, “and yet we want to prioritize a stadium, a new stadium? What matters most?”
Supporters of the proposed $2.2-billion-dollar stadium, including Mayor John Cooper, say it’s a better deal for taxpayers than renovating Nissan Stadium.
The council will next take up the stadium on April 4.
