Governor Bill Haslam has named 18 Tennessee teachers to a new advisory group, dubbed the “Teacher Cabinet.”
Kyle Prince is an algebra teacher from Rutherford County’s Central Magnet High School who interviewed for the assignment and was picked for the panel, which will meet quarterly. He says he hopes to be a voice for teachers in the governor’s office. He wants to share some of his ideas specifically on collaborative lesson plans.
“There have been a few times where I kind of thought to myself, there’s not really a method by which teachers can communicate to state officials. So this is a nice change.”
Each district was supposed to nominate a candidate for the Teacher Cabinet. The pool was then trimmed down to 18.
Murfreesboro, Lebanon and Franklin are represented in the final group, but Nashville is not — Metro Schools didn’t nominate anyone. A district spokesman says “it was a simple mistake and oversight.”
The panel’s first meeting is next month.
