Tennessee Right to Life is supporting a measure that would add exceptions to the state’s abortion law. The changes they made assure the group no abortions will take place unless they save the life of the mother.
Will Brewer, a lobbyist with Tennessee Right to Life, says the amendment they’ve worked on has been previewed by the main players.
“We have been in consultation with doctors,” Brewer said, “and then, we have worked closely with Sen. (Ken) Yager, the lieutenant governor’s office, the governor’s office and the attorney general’s office on this amendment.”
The changes allow for doctors to terminate ectopic pregnancies and provide treatment for miscarriages. But those two exclusions make for a shorter list than what was included in another bill that stalled last month. Brewer says that bill was too vague.
“This bill is far more succinct and doesn’t create as many exceptions and loopholes as 883 did,” he said.
The bill Brewer is backing is expected to be heard for the first time Tuesday in the House Population Health subcommittee.
