Potential renters, homebuyers and home sellers have a new avenue to find and list available housing. Earlier this month, the Tennessee Housing Development Agency created a free website for property listings.
THDA started developing the website, following hurricane Katrina and the subsequent problem many people had finding housing. Spokesperson Patricia Smith says the “Tennessee Housing Search” site has two main goals, and unlike many other THDA services the website is not income based.
“We want to have all properties available to help existing renters and we want to have properties available, should the country face another disaster. There would be a central depository of all rental housing in Tennessee. So it’s not tied to an income level, because people running away from a natural disaster might not be of low income.”
THDA is working closely with the Chattanooga Housing Authority, which already has a similar data base. Nearly two dozen other states have established comparable websites.
The site gives basic property facts, such as number of baths, bedrooms and square footage. In its first week more than 11,000 listings from across the state were placed on the site. It is TNHousingSearch.org.
