State IDs in Tennessee are getting an update.
Starting now, Tennesseans who apply for a license or need a new one will no longer get the old design, which had featured the Bass Pro Shop pyramid in Memphis, the AT&T building in Nashville and the Great Smokies in East Tennessee.
The newer look incorporates the Tennessee flag as a backdrop with the statehouse in the foreground. The design matches a redesign of the state’s license plates in 2022, which sunset a mountainous forest design in favor of a more flag-focused plate.
The Tennessee Department of Safety and Homeland Security said the new IDs will be harder to duplicate.
“The new Tennessee Driver Licenses incorporate the latest technology which makes them more difficult to counterfeit, alter, or duplicate,” Commissioner Jeff Long said in a press release. “These countermeasures help prevent theft and fraud and help keep your identity safe.”
Existing IDs are still valid through their expiration date.
