Fred Thompson continues a cruise through the state today at several campaign fundraisers after three yesterday in Clarksville, Murfreesboro and Franklin. The former Tennessee senator has used his wide support here to raise money for his presidential bid.
“You know I won two races here by 20 points each and left office under my own power in pretty good shape politically. So I’m very proud of that and very gratified to have the support I’ve always had in Tennessee.”
Meeting with local reporters yesterday, Thompson said he’s not just using the state as an ATM machine and will schedule more events open to the public.
Quarterly fundraising totals are due in at the end of this month. Thompson said his numbers are strong but lowered expectations a bit. He encouraged voters to compare apples to apples. He said he’s had three weeks to raise what other candidates have raised in three months.
Thompson continues to offer a strong front on Iraq, saying the war should be considered a global conflict against radical Islam. In response to Congress’ expansion of the State Children’s Health Insurance Program, Thompson says he would vote against it. He calls SCHIP a good idea that Democrats expanded until it was – quote – “out of wack.”
In a Rasmussen poll released this week, Thompson led the field in Tennessee – Republican and Democrat – with a 69-percent approval rating.
