Scammers are targeting consumers taking part in the popular “Cash for Clunkers” program.
The Tennessee Attorney General’s office says websites asking for personal information, like a social security number, aren’t operating legally.
Senior Counsel Jeff Hill:
“They say check your eligibility here, fill out this information but obviously you can do that on the cars.gov website. In fact, to participate in the cash for clunkers program, you don’t need to give anybody your social security number.”
The AG’s office says there’ve been no complaints from consumers yet, but they’re closely monitoring rogue websites.
