Tennessee Republican Mark Green is planning to run for re-election in the U.S. House of Representatives after all. The announcement Thursday comes two weeks after Green said this would be his final term.
In a statement shared with WPLN News, the Clarksville Republican said that he had a change of heart after constituents, colleagues and former President Donald Trump urged him to reconsider.
“I was reminded of the words of General McArthur on a statute at West Point: ‘Duty, honor, country.’ I realized once again: I had a duty to my country to fulfill,” Green said. “I will be running for re-election so I can be there on Day 1 next year to help President Trump end this border crisis once and for all.”
Trump shared his encouragement for Green’s fourth term on social media.
“Mark Green has had lots of options because of his political talents, and the great job he has done as a Congressman, but given the fantastic work he’s doing as Chairman of the Homeland Security Committee,” Trump wrote. “I hope he runs for Re-Election to the U.S. House of Representatives. If he does, he has my Complete and Total Endorsement!”
Megan Barry, former Nashville mayor and current Democratic challenger for Green’s seat criticized his decision.
“Mark Green is cosponsor of a constitutional amendment capping Congressional terms at three, yet he’s now running for his fourth term,” she said in a statement. “I remain in this race to fight for reproductive freedom and access to affordable healthcare, and to give Middle Tennessee families a voice in Congress for an economy that works for all. These families deserve representation in Washington from someone who actually wants the job.”
