Tennessee’s Democratic Party has agreed to consider a recount in this year’s closest state senate race, between a veteran Nashville lawmaker and his young challenger.
Earlier this month 84-year-old Douglas Henry narrowly edged out his primary opponent, 33-year-old Jeff Yarbro.
Since election night, Henry’s lead over Yarbro has shifted, and now stands at 11 votes. Yarbro has been pushing for a recount.
State Democratic Chairman Chip Forrester says the party’s 72-member executive committee will decide on Monday whether to have the election commission carry one out.
“I’m just really hesitant to speculate about what could happen in the recount. Let’s just see what happens in terms of what the state executive committee / primary board will do, and then what happens if – during the recount.”
Forrester says it’s unclear who would pay for the recount, but that the cost would be quote “modest.”
Whoever wins the Democratic primary will face Republican Steve Dickerson in this fall’s general election.
