Brentwood-based Tractor Supply Company credits high-end pet food with helping it mark record sales last year.
Tractor Supply hasn’t been slowed much by the economic downturn. That success is partially based in an unconventional move the company made back in 2010: investing in premium-health pet foods.
Chief Merchandising Officer Greg Standfort said sales have been so good, they plan on expanding the brand.
“It was a pretty gutsy move on our part to launch a premium dog food in the middle of a recession. It’s been a tremendous launch, been very successful, and now we’re going to be expanding it across to other species.”
In a meeting Wednesday with investors, company officials said 2011 is starting out better than predicted. They didn’t think sales would go up from this same time last year, but now expect to make some gains. All that news comes on the heels of a company-record 3.64 billion dollars in sales from 2010.
