Supermajority is a new podcast from NPR’s Embedded, in partnership with Nashville Public Radio, exploring what happens when one political party has near-complete control. In this four-episode series, hosted by WPLN reporter Meribah Knight (The Kids of Rutherford County; The Promise), we follow three conservative moms over the course of a year as they learn to navigate Tennessee’s Republican-controlled state legislature.
“These three mothers, all of them lifelong conservatives, were shocked to find themselves pushing back against their own party,” Knight said. “What they found is that very few legislators really wanted to listen. And that’s because they don’t have to. Republicans control both the legislature and the governor’s office, essentially giving them the power over the state’s entire political agenda.”
What does that power mean to lawmakers? Who are the constituents pushing back? And what might it all reveal about the fragility of our democracy?
Supermajority episodes publish on Thursdays, June 20, June 27, July 4 and July 11.
