The Tennessee Valley Authority is getting specific about additional safety measures it might put in place at its nuclear plants following the crisis in Japan. They include more satellite phones for plant operators and less nuclear waste stored onsite.
At Thursday’s TVA board meeting, chief operating officer Bill McCollum said some changes may take a year.
“Examples of this might include moving additional spent fuel from pools to dry cask storage canisters.”
Canisters are seen as a safer storage option. Some of TVA’s nuclear waste has been sitting in pools for decades.
Longer term, McCollum says the utility is weighing whether it needs additional backup diesel generators.
