Several Tennesseans spoke today about the struggles with high medical bills for the uninsured and insured, at a rally sponsored by the Consumers Union, which publishes Consumer Reports Magazine.
Molly Secours is a local filmmaker who was diagnosed with uterine cancer a year ago. Even though she had insurance, her first concern was how she was going to pay for her share of the treatment.
“The price of that one shot of chemo, that one shot of Neulasta that I would need for six more chemo sessions, it was $6,000 for that one shot. And then they showed the discount, and the discount, because I had some medical coverage, they reduced the cost to $3,000 a shot.”
A University of Tennessee study says that the number of people in the state without insurance is on the decline, but 10% of Tennesseans are still uninsured.
