The number two man in the U. S Department of Commerce says Tennessee is echoing a national trend, with an increase in professional jobs, particularly in the medical field, while job numbers in construction and retail are going down.
Assistant Secretary of Commerce Israel Hernandez says the nation has added 1.8 million jobs in the past year. He says with unemployment up in July, states like Tennessee must put a premium on education.
“Tennessee has a greater opportunity for people who are coming out of college. For those who are young professionals and want to find opportunities, if you have a graduate degree, there are great opportunities for you to find a job.”
Only about a quarter of Tennesseans have a Bachelor’s degree.
Hernandez will visit Nashville and Memphis next Thursday to give a “Trade 101” seminar to businesses of all sizes that want to export their goods and services.
This year Tennessee has averaged about $22 billion in exports.
