Volkswagen wants several of its parts makers to set up shop right next door to the plant it’s building in Chattanooga.
The project could employ hundreds of workers in addition to the two thousand expected at the plant itself.
Volkswagen wants eight to ten of its parts makers right next to the factory. To that end it’s looking to lease some 400 thousand square feet to supply companies. Volkswagen Chattanooga CEO Frank Fischer says it’s necessary so suppliers can meet short deadlines on production orders.
“There are a lot of just-in-sequence parts, just-in-time parts, and considering the lead time there’s is no other chance than to have suppliers very close to the site.”
Fischer says the supplier project is still being negotiated, but early on its workforce should number in the hundreds.
