The security contractor responsible for guarding many Metro buildings has responded to the city’s request for proof that the guards have been doing their jobs.
City officials found evidence yesterday that suggests guards weren’t on duty at the Metro Office Building on any Saturdays over the last three months, even though the city was paying for them.
Florida-based Wackenhut had hired a sub-contractor– Specialized Security Consultants of Mt. Juliet – to do the job. Wackenhut officials said in a letter today/yesterday that the sub-contractor has been taken off the job.
Specialized Security did bill the firm for the hours Metro says are unaccounted for, according to the Wackenhut letter. Calls to the Mt. Juliet security firm found a voicemail box that was full.
A Wackenhut spokesman says if a Metro audit determines the subcontractor billed for hours that weren’t worked, the company will reimburse the city.
Police and city officials haven’t made a connection of whether the unprotected office building has anything to do with the Christmas Eve break-in, which wasn’t on a Saturday. Thieves got away with two laptop computers from the Election Commission which have stored on them the names, addresses, dates of birth and social security numbers of every registered voter in Nashville.
