Now, those who don’t have one can be given a cable lock. The Tennessee Department of Safety is promoting its free gun lock giveaway.

During the special session last August, the General Assembly gave the department a million dollars to promote free gun locks for Tennessee residents. So far, it’s resulted in 15- and 30-second commercials released last week.
The video begins with a father and son shooting at tin cans. The daughter, looking on from the house, goes into a closet and finds a rifle. Then, her dad walks in and sees her holding it. He asks what she’s doing, and she turns and points the gun at him.
It could have resulted in her pulling the trigger. But that wasn’t possible because the dad had a cable lock on the gun preventing it from being fired.

The ad serves as a reminder that guns should be unloaded and locked before being stored away.
Gun locks are available for free statewide at all Tennessee Highway Patrol headquarters and Driver Services Centers.
