The COVID-19 pandemic has made housing stability an urgent issue for Nashville elected officials to work through.
Now, a volunteer group known as Red Door Collective has released a report that analyzes where evictions are happening and how often. This research is the tip of the iceberg, as the organization pushes for housing justice in a state with few protections for renters.
This past year, Nashville’s 37203 zip code, which roughly covers the Gulch and West End, had the most detainer warrants. That’s the first step in the legal process that kicks people out of their homes.
Still, there were fewer detainer warrants between January 2020 and March 2021. Red Door Collective member Jack Marr says that shows the government’s pandemic protections helped.
“Which tells us that in the worst of times, there are things that can be done,” they say. “Which means in the best of times, there are things that can be done. Like, this isn’t a problem that is natural and can’t be changed.”
