Tennessee’s ban on abortion help for minors nears the finish line

It could soon be a crime to help Tennessee teenagers get an abortion. A bill passed out of the Senate and has one vote left in the House. Like many abortion policies, vague wording leaves a lot open to interpretation.

At a rally in Nashville, Planned Parenthood organizer Julie Edwards looked out at some of the “back alley abortion” imagery on signs, including bloody coat hangers. But Edwards told the crowd, driven into the streets by the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision on abortion rights, that it’s not like the old days before Roe v. Wade.

Tennessee’s legislature is joining a few other Republican-led states in advancing new restrictions on abortion pills, which have grown more common than surgical abortions. A bill approved by the Senate Judiciary Committee on a party line vote Tuesday night would add criminal penalties.
