Tennessee has open primaries, but Republicans are trying to close them

In Tennessee, voters don’t have to register with a political party to vote in primaries. They can choose to receive either a Republican or Democratic ballot. Republican lawmakers are trying to change that — worrying voting rights groups.

After House vote, Tennessee governor will soon decide if drag shows should be banned from public spaces

Democrats announce legislation to repeal Tennessee’s total abortion ban — with no Republican support

Democrats in the Tennessee General Assembly are fighting back against the state’s total abortion ban that went into effect last year. Members of the party presented a new bill Tuesday called the Fundamental Right to Reproductive Health Care Act. But any legislation will be impossible to pass without Republican support.

Tennessee teachers could see their budgets for classroom supplies more than double under a new proposal
