Congressman Harold Ford Junior told a group of African American ministers today that education is one of his main themes as he campaigns for the seat of outgoing Senator Bill Frist.
Ford told the Interdenominational Ministerial Fellowship that all kids need to be encouraged to go to college and says he’d support the government paying for tuition.
“And in exchange for tuition, they give the country back, give the country back service with the joining of the national guard, or with what I envision with a national service corps including with what we talked about earlier with this early childhood corps that could resemble a lot what the peace corps resembled in President Kennedy’s days.”
Ford is the likely democratic nominee and he’ll face the winner of the republican nomination primary, currently being fought between former Congressmen Ed Bryant and Van Hilleary and former Chattanooga Mayor Bob Corker.
At an early voting rally later in the day, Ford said he appeals to voters across the political spectrum because he believes in curtailing government spending.
“As I talk to republicans, they don’t like all this spending. They think that government’s gotten way to big and republicans control the house, the senate and the white house. And government has grown faster than it’s ever been.”
Early voting for the August third primary ends July 29th.
