Voting for the Iraq parliamentary elections began in Nashville today/yesterday and it was a family affair for most Iraqis.
At a Kurdish restaurant on Nolensville road, Ibrahim Taily and his two cousins, two female relatives and several children, sat having a meal after they voted. Taily says they traveled from all the way from St. Louis and admits he was speeding a little to get here.
“We hit the road about five thirty then we get here like ten o’clock.”
Nashville Kurd Zhian Ahmed is working the polls for the next few days. She says after all the years under Saddam Hussein’s regime, she is almost speechless about getting to vote.
“So now that he’s gone, and now we have all the right to kind of vote for democracy, I could say it’s awesome. That’s how I could say it, I mean I’m looking forward to see a great Iraq in the future.”
Voting continues through Thursday.
