A state-wide gay and lesbian advocacy group was on Capitol Hill today to meet with state legislators.
Tennessee Equality Project board chair Chris Sanders says there are currently no bills that concern the gay and lesbian community, but that doesn’t mean some won’t be filed.
“We’re monitoring the possibility that some of the negative bills that were introduced last year could come up again. So far there are no red flags but we are continuing to watch. And we want to be proactive and we think by being here even before bills are advanced, I believe the deadline is just a few days from now, we want to advance equality and that means being proactive before the bills are even advanced.”
Sanders says T-E-P is trying to stop the referendum on the constitutional amendment to codify marriage between one man and one woman from reaching voters in November. The issue is currently working its way through state courts.
