An equal pay measure died in the state senate earlier this week that would have penalized employers who knowingly paid women less than men for the same job.
Governor Phil Bredesen came out strongly against the measure when asked about it at the Tennessee Business Roundtable yesterday, but softened his stance today after meeting last night with House Majority leader and the bill’s sponsor, Kim McMillan.
“What I interpreted yesterday was some sort of major bill to open up the pay equity issue for similar jobs across different circumstances and bring things into the courts. I had reservations about that as a concept. What this bill specifically does as explained to me by Kim sounds to me very reasonable and if Kim would like me to weigh in on the issue I’m more than happy to do so.”
The bill is still moving on the house side, but unless the senate side resurrects it, the proposal will be dead for the year.
