Camellia Burris, who co-produced the podcast with contributor Emily Siner, accepted the award on Aug. 15 at a gala during the NABJ national convention in Atlanta. WPLN’s entry won in the category for “Podcast — Commentary and Discussion,” competing against nominees from the ABC’s 20/20 and Center for Investigative Reporting, San Francisco; PRX, Cambridge, MA.
“The Debt” traces Tennessee State University’s decades-long fight for fair funding — through an overlooked Civil Rights lawsuit, a historic merger with a predominantly white university, a dramatic student hunger strike, and a lawmaker who discovered his father’s old research on underfunding. an overlooked civil rights lawsuit.
“In a profession that can be relentless, we do not always stop long enough to recognize our excellence,” said NABJ President Errin Haines. “This work matters… (and) reflects the highest aspiration of NABJ.”
“The Debt” has also garnered other honors this year, including a regional win for Best News Documentary from the Edward R. Murrow Awards, and a finalist nod from the Education Writers Association.
