The Metro Legal Department says the “English Only” petition can’t legally be placed on the November ballot.
Councilman Eric Crafton has pushed for the charter amendment to require all Metro communications to be in English. He collected 12-thousand-500 voter signatures to get the amendment on the ballot.
But in a letter to the Davidson County Election Commission yesterday, Metro Law Director Sue Cain says voter-led charter amendment drives have to be at least two years apart.
On November 7th 2006, voters approved the charter amendment limiting the government’s ability to raise property taxes unless voters approve. This year’s election is three days earlier, putting Crafton’s ‘English Only’ amendment three days shy of the two-year moratorium.
