In order to increase revenues, the Tennessee Board of Regents’ finance committee voted to increase tuition today. The committee also voted to change how tuition is billed.
Any student taking less than 12 hours a semester will only pay an increase of about 1%. But anyone taking over 12 will have to pay between 6% and 9% more.
Dale Sims is TBR’s Vice Chancellor for Finance. He says this is the fairest way to spread the cost, since currently, full-time students pay a flat-rate.
“By charging some amount for those hours, we’re basically able to limit the rate of increase for students that are considered part-time, let’s say those taking less than 12 hours and in particular, those taking less than nine.”
The state cut TBR’s budget more than $116 million this year, but stimulus money will fill the gap until 2012.
The full board, which oversees MTSU, Austin Peay and Tennessee State, among others, will vote on the tuition increase today.
