Judicial Retention
Part of the reason today’s primary ballot is so long is the 27 judges who are up for retention. These Supreme Court and appellate court judges were appointed by the governor, and they don’t have opponents. It’s a yes or no question whether these judges stay in office. Because voters generally know little about the candidates, many just skip this section of the ballot, and the judges are almost always retained.
