Tennessee Appeals Court Strikes Down Deal To Spare Abdur’Rahman From Death Penalty

An effort to overturn a Tennessee man’s death sentence appears to be headed back to trial. The state Court of Criminal Appeals has struck down a deal with Nashville’s district attorney that would have changed Abu-Ali Abdur’Rahman’s sentence to life imprisonment.

The Metro Nashville Police Department has a new leader after a months-long, nationwide search that ultimately isn’t venturing far for the selection. Interim Chief John Drake is dropping the word “interim” from his title, Mayor John Cooper announced Monday. Drake has run the department since former Chief Steve Anderson retired in August.

Tennessee Will Craft State Budget On Expectation Of Some Revenue Growth

Tennessee is betting on growth next year: not a lot, but not quite as modest as some projections. The State Funding Board predicts tax revenues will increase by about 1% in the next fiscal year, and between 2.5% and 3% the year after that.
