Former governor Winfield Dunn is lending his name and support to republican Jim Bryson’s run for governor.
Bryson, a state senator from Franklin, named Dunn as his campaign’s state-wide chairman today. Originally a dentist, Dunn had never won a race until his long-shot win for the office of governor in 1970.
Dunn says he was concerned about the lack of a republican challenger to incumbent governor Phil Bredesen. Dunn says that changed after he had several meetings with Bryson.
“As a result of it, he decided to run. I tell you he’s exceeded my fondest expectations in terms of the characteristics I described up there a few minutes ago, I am absolutely overjoyed. I think his candidacy is going to mean a great deal across the board on the republican side of the political ledger and that makes me feel good as well.”
Dunn stressed leadership and character as two qualities he and the campaign are emphasizing. Bryson has yet to push particular issues in his campaign, which is still in its early stages.
