Employees of the Shur Brite car wash in Nashville have won a $130,000 settlement against the company for unfair labor practices.
Car wash employee Walter Jasper says managers were systematically shorting hours.
“Means like they’ll clock you in, then clock you back out. Then clock you back in, then clock you back out. Some employees as well as myself we’ll be there by 7:30, leave there by 5:30 or 6, or something like that and only get three hours. And we’d be there all day.”
122 employees will split the $130,000 settlement, according to how many hours the company owed each worker.
The employees began organizing last spring with the help of Middle Tennessee Jobs For Justice. That’s the same group that has also been working with the Nashville taxi cab drivers over the last year to win some types of wage concessions. The group says it will continue working with employees at other car washes in town. The group praised Shur-Brite for stepping up and paying what was owed to the employees.
