Council Defers Rules Governing Home Studios

An effort to legalize home recording studios in Nashville was delayed Tuesday night by – of all people – the head of the local musicians union, bassist Dave Pomeroy.

“To impose arbitrary standards of size, percentage of property and number of people allowed will be a nightmare to enforce. I do not oppose the intent of this bill, and I agree that recording studios should be legal, but in it’s current form, I cannot support it.”

The bill before the Metro Council was on public hearing.

The council voted to defer action until the legislation’s sponsor, Megan Barry, could get more input from musicians. Currently, the bill would allow studios to have 10 visitors a day, whereas most home-based businesses are barred from serving clients on site.
