Express Scripts has won the contract to be the pharmacy benefit manager for CoverRx, a prescription drug plan that’s under the Cover Tennessee umbrella.
It’s the first contract to be awarded for any of the programs in Cover Tennessee which also includes the health insurance for employees of small businesses and the high-risk pool.
State Finance Commissioner Dave Goetz says the plan is open to anyone who doesn’t have insurance or have access to drugs as part of their health plan.
“”The purpose of this is to replace the safety net pharmacy assistance program that we had been providing. So that what it does is provide access to really as many as four times as many generic drugs at a discounted rate and then provides access to mental health drugs and to insulin on a subsidized basis.”
The program will be open to those making less than 250-percent of the poverty level. No premiums will be charged, but there will be small co-pays ranging from 3 to 15-dollars.
Goetz isn’t sure how many people will sign up but says the entire CoverRx program is expected to cost 44-million dollars over 3 years.
