With the November election rapidly approaching, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist has been campaigning for republican candidates around the country. He says many Americans are feeling dissatisfied with Congress right now.
But Frist doesn’t think that the recent scandal involving former Florida Congressman Mark Foley will affect the chances of Republican senate candidate Bob Corker.
“What happens with Mark Foley. Tennesseans will say, ‘that’s bad. That needs to be condemned. That needs to be handled aggressively,’ and it was. When they go in the voting booth to elect their next United States senator, I don’t think it will have any role whatsoever. They want to be able to look the Democrat in the eye, they want to be able to look the Republican in the eye, and they’ll say, ‘who can I trust.’”
Foley left the House in late September after he was found to be sending inappropriate messages to male pages.
Frist isn’t the only G-O-P heavyweight to campaign and raise money for the former Chattanooga Mayor. President George Bush has been here twice and First Lady Laura Bush was in Knoxville last week. Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani will be in Chattanooga with Corker on Monday.
Indicating the closeness and importance of the race, Congressman Harold Ford Junior has also had his share of national democrats campaigning for him—most notably, former President Bill Clinton, Illinois Senator Barak Obama and former Virginia Governor Mark Warner.
Early voting for the November 7th election is already underway.
