Governor Phil Bredesen told a health care information technology meeting yesterday, that in order for Americans to have electronic health records in the near future, leadership is needed at the federal level.
Bredesen says standards need to be developed so systems developed by states, companies and organizations can talk to each other.
“Ultimately this just cries out for the national government to step in and set some standards. Not to try and do everything but to step in and set some standards we could all work toward. If everybody works in a different direction for ten years and then you try and put things back together, it’ll be a lot harder to set some parameters now.”
The federal government has put together a commission that’s to come up with recommendations, and those won’t be ready until after the end of the year at the earliest.
