
A protest of Tennessee’s drag restrictions has been postponed. The announcement from Nashville Pride and Inclusion Tennessee comes as the threat of anti-LGBTQ violence is on the rise.
Conservative backlash to the Covenant School shooting has some members of the transgender community afraid to leave their homes.
Dr. Christina Edmondson is a member of Koinonia Church, where Katherine Koonce was a congregant. Koonce was one of six people killed at Covenant School on Monday.
Edmondson worries that politicians are using the shooter’s gender identity to avoid passing gun restrictions.
“This pattern of taking a marginalized group, taking a minority group, and using them as a point of distraction to increase polarization happens all the time,” Edmondson tells This is Nashville. “(It has) devastating consequences on people’s safety, and also on this problem not being directly addressed as it deserves to be.”
A march was scheduled for Saturday, when a state law restricting drag in public spaces is set to go into effect. Organizers say there are more details to come.
