The former Hickory Hollow Mall property in Antioch could finally be put to use after years of neglect.
The site is expected to be purchased by Metro government, which intends to transform it into a community hub. One big goal is to lease part of the space to Vanderbilt University Medical Center.
“This area is one of Davidson County’s lowest rates for routine health checkups,” says VUMC President Jeff Balser. “It’s also one of the highest rates for COVID infection.”
The focus of the health care facility, Balser says, will be preventing disease as well as treating it. Vanderbilt’s presence will also bring dozens of new jobs to the area.
Nashville State Community College President Shanna Jackson wants to use that as an opportunity to build an employment pipeline for students.
“Health care leaders like Vanderbilt need skilled workers to grow and thrive,” Jackson says. “Together, we can create unique and innovative pathways.”
But before the project moves forward, the development needs to be approved by the Metro Council.
Nashville Mayor John Cooper and Councilwoman Joy Styles are planning to file legislation allowing the city to purchase the space, which is two separate properties, for $44 million.
Officials say the goal is to negotiate a leasing agreement with Vanderbilt hospital that would offset Metro’s purchase price.
