A Metro Nashville police officer shot and killed a man at a home in Antioch Monday night.
Officials say 30-year-old Joshua Kersey was holding a male housemate at knifepoint in a bedroom. Family members were able to leave the home before police came in.
Body camera footage shows that officers attempted to negotiate with Kersey for over half an hour through the closed door.
When officers heard a scuffle inside, they entered. The footage shows the two men in a physical altercation in the corner of the room. They fell to the ground, and an officer shot Kersey. He died at the scene, police say.
The officer who fired is Cole Ranseen, who joined the department last year.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is looking into the incident. The agency initially said officers “entered the room and encountered the subject with a large knife, coming toward them.” However, that is not what the body camera footage shows — Kersey was already on his back when he was shot.
So far this year, the TBI has been called in to investigate 47 shootings by law enforcement across the state, including four shootings in Nashville.
