Nissan hopes new names will put some spark back into its Infiniti luxury brand, including one model built in Middle Tennessee. Infiniti’s current offerings run from G sedans to JX SUVs. Now all of its models will either start with Q or QX.
This change is in name only. Infiniti isn’t getting rid of or redesigning any of its models. Nissan Vice President Johan de Nysschen says the new naming scheme harkens back to Infiniti’s beginnings, more than 20 years ago.
“The original Infiniti, when it was first launched as the iconic Q45, really already set the brand on a course with reputation for a meticulous attention to detail. We’d like to capture that spirit again.”
The JX SUV is built at Nissan’s Smyrna plant. Come 2014, it will be known as the QX60. Even before the name change, Infiniti is seeing a big jump in sales—more than 40 % in November compared to last year. In most of the luxury market, it lags behind BMW, Mercedes, and Lexus.
